Great advice regarding quick recovery from a loss and rebounding to better results. Kayden Troff fell to a tactic in the first game but followed with a deft and thoughtful win after his quick recovery. His potential is nearly off the charts.

I have a wierd way of dealing with my losses. For some reason, I play my best games after my loss! My thought process is "Aw I lost, might as well play really crazy and fun while I can". The next game, I pretend I'm a grandmaster and go into a wierd fun line, like the nc6 french. I get some cool position and I'm so excited and I get awsome tactics! Then I go on to lose for games, lol. This is only true for OTB, ofc.

Congratulations Kayden!  12 years old with an IM norm, amazing achievement.

Great analysis Melik. It's instructive to see how you think about the middle game plans and how they relate to the pawn structure.  Thanks.

Melik is very "zen like" as he discusses, the flow of emotions stemming from wins and losses in the tournament play of one of his future champions. He says play the game as is, don't worry about points, future games etc., stay in the present - play your game - calm, patient and detached.

Melik shows the skills of a great coach as he discusses the psychology of chess and the need to have a short memory and a strong recovery system when it comes to tournament losses.

    Notes -

There is a difference between making mistakes and inaccuracies- words of a philosopher discussing the economics of chess.

When you attack, and then have to back down, you have failed in calculation and initiative.

    thanks,
