phprl3qjB.pngThe first round of the inaugural Norway Chess 2013 tournament didn't disappoint eager chess fans watching the excellent online coverage from around the world.

The winner of the blitz tournament Sergey Karjakin continued where he left off, making the most of the white pieces to beat Teimour Radjabov.

Hikaru Nakamura also made a good start to his Nordic campaign with a nice win against the Chinese GM Wang Hao.  First to finish was the game between Vishy Anand and Lev Aronian, which was an evenly matched draw. Magnus Carlsen tested Veselin Topalov's endgame technique, but the Bulgarian never really looked in danger, and the game was drawn after 51 moves.

In the last game to finish tournament underdog Jon Ludvig Hammer was eventually ground down by Peter Svidler for the third decisive game of the day.

I'd like to see Topalov win this tournament.

Poor Teimour indeed! The least they could have done is post one of his wins in the article on the blitz competition. Well, in the spirit of positive thinking, I predict Radjabov will win this tournament by a two-game margin........

Radjabov actually did pretty well in the blitz tournament (I think he had something like a 5-game win streak).  I thought it might be a sign of breaking out of the slump, but now I think we'll have to wait and see whether that was not the case, or whether this round was just a fluke for him.

These games were tooo GM like... very difficult for us amateurs to understand. But then the average Elo is 2700+... what do you expect.

Carlsen-Anand match result - DRAW; because both may not want to reveal much to the other; before the World Championship!!

Nakamura really needed this good start.  He's got Aronian, Carlsen, Anand, and Topalov in the next four rounds.  Absolutely brutal stretch of games for him.

The Svidler-Hammer endgame is rather instructive. Especially the analysis during the press conference.
