In August there were conflicting and worrying reports that former world chess champion Boris Spassky had either fled, or been taken against his will, from his home in Paris back to Russia.

Spassky had lived in France with his third wife since 1976, and had been receiving treatment for a second stroke which he suffered in 2010.

Now some more information about the fate of Boris Vasilievich has emerged after the great champion spoke about his recent experiences in an interview with WhyChess.

I had the great fortune to meet Mr. Spassky years ago at the Paul Masson Chess tourney, got his autograph. A very classy gentleman indeed.

I'm glad to hear him thank God for somehow if he and his son could communicate. It's hard to be alone especially when you are older, and somehow no body forget you. God bless you Mr. Boris Spassky!!

The first time he played the up and coming wonder kid Fischer in 1960, Spassky (as white) opened with Kings gambit! Fantastic!!!!!!!!

He is a wonderful attack player!

And it was great that he played the return match with Fischer in 1992.

    Love him!

Spassky's one of my favorite players.  In my view, it's wrong that some people only remember him as the player who lost to Fischer in 1972, and not a genius as Fischer was.  Definitely one of the best champions ever.

I've never heard of anyone who had a bad word to say about this man--that says a lot.

For someone who's 75 Boris looks and sounds good. The interview gives the impression his wife and/or sister stole everything he had, but who knows what really happened without getting more details from other sources.

One thing we can all count on is that FIDE will completely ignore him just like it ignored another great champion, Smyslov, allowing him to die in poverty and obscurity. I hope Boris escapes this fate!

What a beautiful guy. It's sad that his personal life, and later his health, have been so stormy. Get better and live long, Boris!
