Mar Del Plata 2012 logo.gifThe 7th Continental Chess Championship took place from 12-21 October in Mar del Plata, Argentina.

The championship is open to all players from Americas (North, Central and South) of any rating.  A rare chance for those with more modest ratings to compete with some of the best players in the region!

The format was an 11-round Swiss Open with more than 200 players taking part, and the top four finishers earned the right to compete in the 2013 World Cup in Tromso. That makes the event effectively a world championship qualifier, so any title norms earned are worth double.

Peru's top GM Julio Granda Zuniga took first place on tie-break with a score of 8½/11.  GM Alexander Shabalov, GM Diego Flores and GM-elect Eric Hansen were the other World Cup qualifiers [Correction - it appears that there will be a tie-break playoff between all the players on 8½ points in order to decide which 4 get the qualification spots]

@ RuralRob it would have been odd if Granda had missed qualification but still won the event on mathematical tiebreak!

    Hansen 1.5/4
    Shabalov 2/4
    Kaidanov 3/4
    Granda 2.5/4
    Flores 1/4

With Hansen winning his last game vs Flores to grab the last qualification spot. I am very happy Kaidanov and Shabalov got a spot, good job Americans!

Thanks SCS and RuralRob. The official site is certainly running very slowly, which makes it difficult to find information.

I won't be able to update this news article again until tomorrow, so if anyone hears the tie-break results please let everyone know in the comments.

They have a 5 player round-robin rapid play off in a couple hours for the top 4 qualifying spots because there is 5 people tied for first. The loser goes home empty handed.

I am 99% positive the playoffs are occuring in the coming hours, so either your article is premature, or accurate and I got the wrong news (and the playoffs already have occured a couple hours ago).

    Please clarify soon.. thanks!
